Explanation of the Slip Joint (S Joint)

A Slip Joint (also known as a socket and spigot joint or “bell and spigot” joint) is a mechanical pipe connection system where one pipe end is expanded (female/socket end) and the other pipe end remains straight (male/spigot end). The spigot end slides into the socket, creating a connection without the need for on-site butt welding.

The sealing of the joint is ensured by an elastomeric O-ring placed inside the socket groove. When the spigot is inserted, the O-ring is compressed, providing hydraulic tightness and preventing leakage. This type of joint is commonly used in large-diameter water transmission pipelines because it allows faster installation and slight angular flexibility compared to welded joints.

Slip joints are particularly suitable for buried water pipelines, irrigation systems, and municipal water supply networks.
